Employees' Provident Fund (EPF)

A mandatory retirement savings account for employees of firms with 20 or more workers — employer and employee each contribute 12% of basic pay monthly, earning compound interest, withdrawable at retirement or under specific conditions.

What this scheme offers

Left to individual willpower alone, retirement savings tend to lose out to whatever feels urgent this month — which is exactly the problem EPF is designed around. For any employee at a firm with 20 or more workers, it isn't optional: both you and your employer contribute 12% of your basic pay (plus dearness allowance) into the fund every month, automatically, before the money ever reaches a position to be spent on something else. That consistency compounds into a genuinely large sum over a working life, earning interest set annually by the EPFO (historically around 8-8.25%), tax-free up to the statutory limit under Section 80C. You can't touch it freely — withdrawal is tied to retirement, unemployment, or a defined set of specific needs like home purchase, medical emergencies, or a child's education — which is part of why it works as forced savings rather than a flexible account. The scheme itself was formally recast as the EPF Scheme 2026, replacing the original 1952 version, effective June 2026.

Who is eligible

  • Employee of any establishment with 20 or more workers (mandatory above the statutory wage ceiling of ₹15,000/month basic pay, voluntary above it with employer consent).
  • Smaller establishments can opt in voluntarily.
  • International workers in India and certain categories of apprentices follow separate, specific rules.

Documents required

  • Aadhaar card
  • PAN card
  • Bank account details
  • Universal Account Number (UAN), issued automatically on first EPF enrollment by an employer

How to apply

  1. EPF enrollment is handled by your employer when you join an eligible establishment — you don't apply separately.
  2. Confirm your UAN (Universal Account Number) is activated by your employer and linked to your Aadhaar, PAN and bank account through the EPFO Unified Portal.
  3. Check your contribution history and balance anytime by logging into the UAN member portal (epfindia.gov.in) or via the UMANG app.
  4. To withdraw funds (full or partial, under eligible conditions), submit an online claim through the member portal — most straightforward claims are processed without needing to visit an EPFO office.
  5. If you change jobs, your UAN stays the same; simply ensure your new employer links your existing UAN rather than issuing a new one, so your service history and balance carry over.
