Puducherry Free Rice & Sugar Scheme (Ration Shops)

Free rice and sugar for ration-card families in Puducherry through fair price shops — in October 2024 ration shops reopened after years of cash transfers and gave 10 kg rice and 2 kg sugar free; confirm current quantities at your shop.

What this scheme offers

Puducherry has swung between giving rice in kind and giving cash for it, and the ration shops stayed shut for about eight years while cash was transferred to bank accounts. In the 2024-25 budget (2 August 2024) Chief Minister N. Rangasamy announced that free rice would resume through the public distribution system, together with pulses, sugar and edible oil at subsidised rates. On 21 October 2024 Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan launched free distribution of rice and sugar through reopened ration shops — 10 kg of rice and 2 kg of sugar for card-holding families — after the Prime Minister approved supplying commodities instead of the cash equivalent. These are the last quantities that could be confirmed; the monthly amount and whether rice is now in kind or cash should be checked at your ration shop.

Who is eligible

  • A family holding a valid Puducherry ration card (red, yellow or other PDS card).
  • In October 2024 the free rice and sugar went to all card-holding families through fair price shops.
  • New cards, and additions or deletions of names, are to be handled online through common service centres.
  • The quantity, frequency and mode (in kind or cash) can change by order — check the latest notice.

Documents required

  • Valid Puducherry ration card
  • Aadhaar of family members, which the ration shop may ask for
  • For a new card or change of names: documents specified by the Civil Supplies Department at a common service centre

How to apply

  1. There is no application for the rice itself — you need a valid ration card.
  2. Check your ration shop's notice board for the month's distribution schedule.
  3. Go to your fair price shop with the ration card and collect the rice and sugar.
  4. For a new card, or to add or remove a name, apply through a common service centre.
  5. If rice is refused or short, complain to the Civil Supplies Department or the Taluk Supply Officer.
