Kanyashree Prakalpa

A UN-recognised scheme keeping West Bengal's girls in school and unmarried until 18 — an annual scholarship while in school, and a one-time grant on turning 18.

What this scheme offers

Launched on 8 March 2013 and internationally recognised by UNICEF and UN agencies, Kanyashree Prakalpa is built around a simple, deliberate incentive: money that flows only as long as a girl stays in school and remains unmarried. It has two components with separate application forms. The K1 annual scholarship pays an unmarried girl aged 13-18, enrolled in Class 8 or above, a yearly amount (currently reported around ₹750, though this has varied — confirm the current figure on the official portal) renewed each year she stays enrolled and unmarried. The K2 one-time grant pays ₹25,000 when a girl turns 18, provided she was unmarried at the time of application and remains in education or employment. The income bar for eligibility was later withdrawn, opening the scheme to a wider set of applicants than originally designed.

Who is eligible

  • K1: Unmarried girls aged 13-18, studying in Class 8 or above in a government-recognised regular or equivalent open school, or a vocational/technical training course.
  • K2: Girls who have turned or are turning 18, were unmarried at the time of application, and are continuing in education or employment.
  • A girl married at the time of application is not eligible under either component — even if she is later separated or was married below the legal age — since the scheme's design specifically incentivises remaining unmarried.

Documents required
