What this scheme offers
A one-time payment of ₹2.5 lakh for widows from low-income Assam families with annual household income up to ₹5 lakh, meant to provide a meaningful financial cushion at a genuinely difficult time rather than a token gesture. In its first phase, the scheme specifically prioritised women who lost their husbands to COVID-19, covering over 874 such cases — a targeted response to a specific, documented group of widows created by the pandemic, before presumably broadening to other eligible widows.
