What this scheme offers
Approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs in October 2017 with an outlay of ₹10.63 lakh crore, Bharatmala replaces the piecemeal, city-to-city approach of earlier highway projects with integrated, corridor-based planning built around actual freight and passenger movement data. It covers several categories: Economic Corridors (~9,000 km connecting major production and consumption centres), Inter-Corridor and Feeder Routes (~6,000 km), National Corridor Efficiency Improvement (~5,000 km), Border and International Connectivity roads (~2,000 km), Coastal and Port Connectivity roads (~2,000 km), and Expressways (~800 km), alongside the residual works of the earlier National Highways Development Project. As of 31 March 2026, over 22,500 km of the Phase-I target had been completed, with full completion expected by 2027-28. The programme is implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and funded through the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund cess, toll monetisation, budgetary support, and private investment.
How this affects citizens
- Faster, cheaper freight movement — the programme targets lower logistics costs for businesses and, indirectly, consumer goods prices.
- Better connectivity to remote, border and coastal regions that previously had limited road access.
- New expressways and economic corridors reduce travel time between major cities and industrial hubs.
- Land acquisition and compensation processes for affected landowners along planned routes are handled by NHAI under standard land acquisition law — if your land is affected, NHAI's regional office is the relevant point of contact.
