What this mission delivered
Launched on 25 June 2015 with the aim of developing 100 tech-enabled, citizen-centric, sustainable urban centres, Smart Cities Mission worked through area-based development (upgrading a specific city district as a model) and pan-city solutions (technology applied city-wide, like traffic management or smart metering). By its conclusion, the mission had completed 7,555 of 8,067 planned projects (94%) worth ₹1,51,361 crore across the 100 selected cities. Every one of the 100 cities now has a fully operational Integrated Command and Control Centre — a real-time monitoring hub for traffic, utilities, safety and municipal services — along with improvements to roads, water supply, sewage treatment, public spaces, and digital governance systems.
What this means for residents now
- If you live in one of the 100 Smart Cities, the infrastructure built under this mission (Integrated Command Centres, upgraded utilities, smart lighting, public Wi-Fi in some areas) continues to operate and be maintained by your local municipal corporation.
- There's no new application or funding cycle to seek under this specific mission — it's fully concluded.
- The 2026 Budget's "City Economic Regions" concept is a broader regional framework (spanning economic integration and connectivity, not just city-level projects) that is still forming — watch for further announcements if you're tracking what replaces this mission.
- For any specific municipal service issue, your City Corporation or Smart City Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) office remains the point of contact, even post-conclusion.
