What this scheme offers
Launched in 1997-98 and substantially expanded from 2018-19, EMRS brings quality, fully-funded residential education to Scheduled Tribe (ST) students, with one school planned for every block that has an ST population above 50% and at least 20,000 tribal residents. Each school has capacity for 480 students and follows the CBSE curriculum, with modern science labs, libraries, computer rooms and sports facilities — plus dedicated JEE/NEET coaching to help tribal students compete for engineering and medical college seats. Everything is free: boarding, lodging, tuition, uniforms, textbooks, stationery and medical care. As of 2026, over 688 EMRS schools are functional across 27 states and UTs, benefiting more than 1.5 lakh students, with a target of 740 schools.
