Pension to Master Craftspersons / Handloom Weavers

A ₹8,000/month pension for award-winning or indigent handloom weavers and master craftspersons aged 60+ with annual income below ₹1 lakh, plus a linked scholarship for their children's higher education.

What this scheme offers

A handloom weaver's income has always been irregular, tied to demand that fluctuates with fashion and season, and by the time age makes the physically demanding work of weaving harder to sustain, many have no retirement savings to fall back on despite a lifetime spent keeping a genuinely significant craft tradition alive. This pension, delivered under the National Handloom Development Programme, targets exactly that gap: ₹8,000 a month for award-winning or otherwise indigent handloom weavers and master craftspersons aged 60 and above, with annual income below ₹1 lakh — a figure that's been revised upward in recent years to better reflect actual living costs. Alongside the pension itself, a companion Shiksha Sahayog Yojana scholarship of up to ₹2 lakh a year is available for up to two of the weaver's children pursuing diploma, undergraduate or postgraduate studies, so the scheme supports both the retiring generation and the next one's chance to study rather than inherit the loom out of necessity.

Who is eligible

  • Handloom weaver or master craftsperson aged 60 years or above.
  • Annual income below ₹1 lakh (indigent circumstances).
  • Typically prioritised for National Award, National Merit Certificate, Shilp Guru, or State Award recipients, though the broader pension isn't strictly limited to award winners — check current eligibility with your district handloom office.

  • Age proof
  • Income certificate
  • Proof of handloom weaving occupation (weaver ID card, cooperative society membership, or equivalent)
  • Bank account details

How to apply

  1. Apply through your district Handloom and Textiles office or your state's Handloom Development Corporation, which administers NHDP schemes locally.
  2. Submit proof of your weaving occupation, age, and income along with your Aadhaar and bank details.
  3. If you're applying for or have received a National Award, Shilp Guru, or similar recognition, mention this explicitly, as it typically streamlines the pension application.
  4. Once approved, the ₹8,000 monthly pension is credited via DBT to your bank account.
  5. For the linked Shiksha Sahayog Yojana scholarship for your children, apply separately through the same district office, submitting your children's admission/enrollment proof for the relevant course.
