What this scheme offers
Most of India's roughly 14 lakh government schools genuinely need better infrastructure than they have, but upgrading all of them simultaneously isn't realistic — so PM SHRI takes a deliberately different approach: select over 14,500 existing government schools nationwide, across central, state, and local-body management, and upgrade them into exemplar institutions with modern infrastructure, smart classrooms, labs, libraries, and teaching aligned to the National Education Policy 2020, intended to then influence neighbouring schools through example and shared practice. This isn't a scheme a student or parent applies to directly — the benefit comes from which school a child is enrolled at, since PM SHRI status is awarded to the school itself through a central-state selection and challenge-method process, not through individual application.
Who is eligible
- Students enrolled at a school selected under the PM SHRI scheme — benefit flows through school selection, not individual eligibility criteria.
- Existing government/government-aided/local-body schools apply for PM SHRI status through their state's School Education Department.
- States must sign an MoU with the central government committing to implement NEP 2020 reforms to participate in the scheme.
Documents required
- Not applicable for students — admission follows your state's normal government-school admission process for the specific PM SHRI school
How to apply
- This is not an individual-application scheme — a student benefits by being enrolled at (or admitted to) a school that has been selected as a PM SHRI school.
- Check whether your nearest government school has PM SHRI status through your state's School Education Department or the PM SHRI portal (pmshrischools.education.gov.in).
- Admission to a PM SHRI school follows the same process as any government school in your area — through your local school admission process, not a separate PM SHRI application.
- For schools (not students): school managements apply for PM SHRI selection through their State/UT Education Department, which nominates eligible schools against the scheme's criteria.
- If your local school isn't yet a PM SHRI school, you can raise the matter with your School Management Committee or local education authority, since selection rounds continue to be announced periodically.
