What this scheme offers
Getting into a genuinely good college on merit and then being unable to pay for it is a particularly frustrating kind of unfairness, and it's exactly what PM Vidyalaxmi is built to prevent: a collateral-free, guarantor-free education loan up to ₹10 lakh for any student admitted purely on merit to one of 860+ Quality Higher Education Institutions (QHEIs) — India's top-ranked colleges and universities by NIRF and similar metrics. Every eligible student gets access to the loan itself and a 75% government credit guarantee on it regardless of family income. On top of that, a 3% interest subvention is available for families earning up to ₹8 lakh a year, applied through a single, genuinely unified digital portal that routes your application to participating banks rather than making you approach each one separately. The subvention specifically is budget-capped at roughly 1 lakh fresh students a year, with priority to those in government institutions and technical or professional courses — so apply early in your admission cycle rather than waiting.
Who is eligible
- Secured admission purely on merit (not management quota) to a degree or diploma programme at one of 860+ listed Quality Higher Education Institutions (QHEIs).
- No family-income restriction for the collateral-free loan and credit guarantee themselves.
- Family annual income up to ₹8 lakh for the additional 3% interest subvention (up to ₹4.5 lakh for 100% subvention under the linked PM-USP CSIS scheme).
Documents required
- Aadhaar card
- Admission letter from the QHEI confirming merit-based admission
- Academic records (previous qualifying examination)
- Income certificate, for interest subvention eligibility
- Bank account details
How to apply
- Register on the PM-Vidyalaxmi portal (pmvidyalaxmi.co.in) using your Aadhaar.
- Fill in the common education loan application form once, specifying your QHEI, course, and loan amount needed.
- Your application is routed to multiple participating banks simultaneously, rather than requiring separate applications to each.
- Compare offers from different banks on the portal and select the one that suits you; submit required documents digitally.
- If your family income qualifies, the 3% (or higher, under PM-USP CSIS) interest subvention is applied automatically once your loan is sanctioned and disbursed — check the current year's subvention cap hasn't already been reached, since it's limited to around 1 lakh students annually.
