Jammu & Kashmir Crop Insurance Scheme

A ₹6,594.93 crore crop insurance allocation covering all varieties of apples and saffron in the Kashmir Division, and mango, litchi and saffron in the Jammu Division — announced in the 2026-27 budget after farmers and orchardists made it their central demand following repeated flood and road-blockade damage to crops. Apple and saffron cultivation are genuinely central to Kashmir's rural economy, making comprehensive insurance for these crops a significant financial safety net rather than a marginal add-on.

What this scheme offers

Apple orchards are the backbone of Kashmir's rural economy in a way few other single crops are for other Indian states, and saffron cultivation carries similar weight for the families who grow it — so when floods and road blockades repeatedly damaged crops and cut off market access in recent years, comprehensive crop insurance became farmers' and orchardists' central, unambiguous demand. The 2026-27 budget answered with a ₹6,594.93 crore allocation covering all varieties of apples and saffron in the Kashmir Division, and mango, litchi and saffron in the Jammu Division — insurance sized to match how much these crops actually mean to the region's livelihoods, not a token gesture.
