What this scheme offers
PMFBY covers crop losses from pre-sowing through post-harvest, caused by natural calamities, pests and diseases — and, from Kharif 2026, wild animal attacks and paddy inundation as well. The farmer's share of the premium is capped at 2% for Kharif food and oilseed crops, 1.5% for Rabi food and oilseed crops, and 5% for annual commercial and horticultural crops; the government subsidises the rest. Claims are assessed using satellite imagery, drone surveys and remote sensing, and paid directly to the farmer's bank account via DBT. Since launch, the scheme has paid out over ₹1.83 lakh crore in claims to more than 22 crore farmer enrolments.
Who is eligible
- Any farmer cultivating a notified crop in a notified area during the notified season — both the village and the crop must appear in your state's official PMFBY notification for that season.
- Loanee farmers (with a Kisan Credit Card or crop loan from a bank/PACS/cooperative) are auto-enrolled by their bank, with the premium deducted from the loan account.
- Non-loanee farmers must apply separately and actively — enrolment is not automatic.
- Tenant farmers and sharecroppers are eligible with a valid tenancy or sharecropping agreement accepted by their state.
- Enrolment has been voluntary for all farmer categories since Kharif 2020.
