Sona Sobran Dhoti Saree Yojana

One saree and one dhoti or lungi, twice a year, for around 57-60 lakh BPL families in Jharkhand.

What this scheme offers

Some welfare schemes have a genuine political history worth knowing: Sona Sobran Dhoti Saree Yojana was first introduced in 2014 under Hemant Soren, discontinued entirely by the NDA government that followed in 2015, and restored once Soren returned to power. It gives around 57-60 lakh BPL families in Jharkhand one saree and one dhoti or lungi twice a year, priced at a token ₹10 a piece rather than free — a design choice that keeps some transactional structure to the scheme (a small payment, a receipt) while remaining a heavily subsidised, genuine benefit for families who'd otherwise need to spend real money on basic clothing.

Who is eligible

  • BPL family with a valid NFSA or Jharkhand State Food Security Scheme (JSFSS) ration card.
  • Resident of Jharkhand.

Documents required

  • NFSA/JSFSS ration card
  • Aadhaar card

How to apply

  1. Visit your designated Public Distribution System (PDS) fair-price shop during the distribution period (typically around festivals, twice a year).
  2. Present your ration card to confirm eligibility.
  3. Pay ₹10 for each item (saree and dhoti/lungi).
  4. No separate application is needed beyond holding a valid ration card — distribution is linked directly to your existing PDS entitlement.
