What this scheme offers
One of the older girl-child welfare schemes among Indian states, Bhagyalakshmi works like a government-run savings bond for up to two daughters of a BPL family: the state deposits a sum with LIC when the girl is born, and it matures into a lump sum payable at 18, meant for her higher education or marriage. Reported maturity figures vary noticeably across sources and birth-year cohorts — commonly cited around ₹1 lakh, though older and newer sources both list slightly different exact figures — alongside annual scholarships tied to school attendance and a health-immunisation schedule. Eligibility rules have also tightened over the scheme's life (for instance, the original scholarship-plus-insurance component stopped applying to girls born after August 2008), so confirm current terms with the Department before assuming a specific figure applies to your situation.
