What this scheme offers
Within its first month in office in 2026, Kerala's newly elected government delivered on one of its 'Indira Guarantee' election promises: free travel for women on KSRTC buses. It's part of a broader pattern across several Indian states in recent years — Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana and others have all introduced similar schemes — recognising that bus fare, small as it seems, can be a genuine barrier to women travelling for work, college or errands, especially for repeated daily trips.
