Vidyajyothi Scheme (Kerala Aid for Students with Disabilities)

Cash help for uniforms and study materials for students with disabilities in Kerala — from ₹1,000 and ₹1,500 in Classes 9–10 to ₹3,000 for degree and postgraduate students — for family income up to ₹1 lakh, with limited seats chosen district by district.

What this scheme offers

The Vidyajyothi scheme, started in August 2020 by the Social Justice Department with the Kerala Social Security Mission, gives students with disabilities cash for the two things families often struggle to buy: study materials and uniforms. The amounts rise with the level of study: for Classes 9 and 10, ₹1,000 for study materials and ₹1,500 for uniform; for Plus One, Plus Two, ITI, polytechnic and VHSC, ₹2,000 for study materials plus a uniform allowance; and for degree, diploma, professional and postgraduate students ₹3,000 each, with no uniform grant. The numbers of awards are limited per district — for example 50 for study materials in Classes 9–10 — so students are selected, with priority to those in the BPL category. The student's annual family income must not exceed ₹1 lakh.

Who is eligible

  • A student with a disability, studying in Classes 9 or 10, Plus One or Plus Two, ITI, polytechnic, VHSC, a degree, diploma or professional course, or postgraduation; 40% or more disability is widely listed.
  • Studying in a government, autonomous or non-government (aided or unaided) institution in Kerala.
  • Annual family income not above ₹1 lakh; priority to BPL families.
  • The Head of the institution must attest the application.
  • Selection is by district, from a fixed number of seats.
