What this scheme offers
Aasara pulls together a genuinely wide range of vulnerable groups under one social security pension rather than running separate schemes for each — the elderly from 57, widows, persons with disabilities, single women, traditional weavers, toddy tappers, HIV-positive individuals and beedi workers are all covered, with the monthly amount ranging from ₹2,016 up to ₹3,016 depending on category (disability pension sits at the higher end, recognising the additional costs disability often brings). The scheme is sometimes referred to as Cheyutha in official and informal contexts, reflecting how the Congress government's rebranding of pension schemes has overlapped with the pre-existing Aasara framework rather than cleanly replacing it.
