What this scheme offers
Also known as the National Family Benefit Scheme (NFBS) in its UP implementation, this scheme exists for one specific, urgent moment: a BPL family has just lost its primary earner, and the bills don't wait for grief to pass. Within 45 days of the death — from natural or accidental causes; suicide, murder and riot-related deaths are excluded — the government transfers ₹30,000 as a single lump sum to the next head of the family. It isn't much against a lifetime of lost income, but it's designed to be fast, which matters more than size when a family needs to cover a funeral and the next month's expenses at the same time.
Who is eligible
- Permanent resident of Uttar Pradesh, urban or rural.
- Family living below the poverty line (BPL).
- The deceased breadwinner was aged between 18 and 60 years.
- Death by natural or accidental causes (deaths by suicide, murder, or in riots are excluded).
- Application made by the next head of the family.
Documents required
- Death certificate of the breadwinner
- BPL certificate / ration card
- Aadhaar card (deceased and applicant)
- Age proof of the deceased
- Bank account details of the applicant
How to apply
- Apply online at nfbs.upsdc.gov.in, or offline through the District Social Welfare Officer.
- Submit the death certificate, BPL proof, and the applicant's relationship to the deceased.
- The application is verified at the block/district level to confirm BPL status and cause of death.
- Once approved, the ₹30,000 is transferred as a single payment to the applicant's bank account — the scheme's own target is within 45 days of the death, though real-world processing time can vary.
- There's no fixed deadline to apply, but applying promptly avoids complications with verifying the circumstances later.
