What this scheme offers
First introduced in the mid-2000s, this is one of the schemes credited with genuinely shifting Bihar's secondary-school enrolment numbers — particularly for girls, for whom a multi-kilometre daily walk to the nearest secondary school was a real and common reason for dropping out after Class 8. Every student who enters Class 9 at a government secondary school, regardless of gender, receives a free bicycle, cutting the effective distance to school and, with it, one of the most cited practical barriers to continuing education.
Who is eligible
- Enrolled in Class 9 at a government or government-recognised secondary school in Bihar.
- Bihar domicile.
- No income restriction — the scheme is universal for all Class 9 students at eligible schools.
Documents required
- School enrollment/admission proof
- Aadhaar card
- Bank account details (for schemes using DBT-based cash transfer instead of physical bicycle distribution, depending on current district implementation)
How to apply
- No separate application is typically needed — schools compile the list of eligible Class 9 students each academic year.
- Confirm with your school's administration that your name is on the eligible list soon after the academic year begins.
- Depending on the district's current implementation, you either receive the bicycle directly or a cash amount via DBT to purchase one yourself — check with your school which method applies.
- If you believe you're eligible but haven't been included, raise it with your school head or the District Education Office.
