What this scheme offers
ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) gives every Indian a unique 14-digit digital health identity, and a "health locker" where prescriptions, lab reports, discharge summaries and consultation records can be stored and accessed from anywhere. When you visit an ABDM-compliant hospital, your discharge summary and reports can push automatically into your ABHA wallet; you can then share your records selectively — and only with your consent, via a consent PIN — with any new doctor. It's worth being clear about what ABHA is not: it's a digital records ID, not health insurance, and it's not directly linked to Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY (the ₹5 lakh hospitalisation cover) — the two Ayushman Bharat programmes serve different purposes and both live under the same government "Ayushman Bharat" umbrella name.
Who is eligible
- Any resident of India — no income, age, or employment restrictions.
- Requires only a valid mobile number and either an Aadhaar card or driving licence for KYC verification.
- Participation is entirely voluntary, and you can request permanent deletion or temporary deactivation of your ABHA at any time.
Documents required
- Aadhaar card (or driving licence, as an alternative)
- Mobile number linked to Aadhaar, for OTP verification
How to create your ABHA
- Visit abha.abdm.gov.in, or use the ABDM-enabled app of a participating healthcare provider.
- Choose to register using your Aadhaar number.
- Enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number for verification.
- Your 14-digit ABHA number and QR code are generated immediately — the whole process typically takes under a minute.
- Set a consent PIN, which you'll use to approve any healthcare provider's request to access your stored records.
- Optionally, set an easy-to-remember "ABHA address" (like an email ID) to make sharing your ID simpler.
