Digital India Programme

The umbrella national programme behind most of the digital government services you already use — UMANG, DigiLocker, e-governance portals — built around three goals: digital infrastructure, digital services, and digital literacy.

Note: Digital India is a broad national programme, not a single benefit you apply for — it's the framework behind many of the individual schemes and tools on this site (ABHA, e-NAM, BharatNet, UMANG, DigiLocker). This page explains the umbrella and how to use its most common citizen-facing tools.

What this programme offers

Launched on 1 July 2015, Digital India set out to transform India into a digitally empowered society across three pillars: digital infrastructure as a core utility for every citizen, governance and services delivered digitally, and universal digital literacy. In practice, this has produced some of the tools Indians now use daily: UMANG, a single app aggregating 1,700+ government services from over 200 departments; DigiLocker, a digital document wallet storing verified copies of your Aadhaar, PAN, driving licence, mark sheets and more, legally equivalent to physical originals; MyGov, a citizen engagement platform for public consultation on policy; and the infrastructure programmes (BharatNet, PM-WANI, Common Service Centres) that make these tools reachable outside major cities. Digital India also drives digital payments growth (UPI), Aadhaar-based e-KYC across government services, and the push toward semiconductor and electronics manufacturing self-reliance.

The most useful tools for everyday citizens

  • UMANG app: One place to access services like EPFO, PM-KISAN status, gas booking, and hundreds more, instead of separate department apps.
  • DigiLocker: Store and share verified digital copies of your key documents — useful for school admissions, job applications and government scheme applications, which increasingly accept DigiLocker documents directly.
  • MyScheme (myscheme.gov.in): The national government scheme search portal, letting you check eligibility across hundreds of central and state schemes in one place.
  • MeriPehchaan: A single sign-on for logging into multiple government portals with one set of credentials.

How to get started

  1. Download the UMANG app (Android/iOS) or visit umang.gov.in, and register with your mobile number.
  2. Set up DigiLocker at digilocker.gov.in or via its app, linking your Aadhaar to automatically pull verified documents from issuing authorities.
  3. Use MeriPehchaan for a single login across multiple government service portals, reducing the need for separate accounts everywhere.
  4. For any specific scheme or service, check whether it's listed on UMANG or myscheme.gov.in before looking for a separate app or portal.
