What this scheme offers
The original AMRUT (2015-2021) focused on improving basic urban infrastructure in 500 selected cities. AMRUT 2.0, launched on 1 October 2021, widens the ambition to every statutory town in the country — aiming for universal coverage of functional household tap connections and sewerage/septage management, alongside rejuvenating urban water bodies, promoting rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge, and creating green spaces and parks. The mission emphasises reducing non-revenue water (water lost to leaks or theft), building city-level water security plans, and encouraging reforms like municipal bond issuance and PPP models to make urban utilities more financially sustainable, alongside the physical infrastructure build-out.
Who is eligible
- Every statutory town in India is covered under the mission's scope for water supply and sewerage infrastructure.
- Individual households in covered towns become eligible for a tap or sewer connection once local infrastructure is extended to their area by the Urban Local Body.
- This is not an individual application scheme — connections are rolled out area-by-area as municipal infrastructure projects are completed.
How to check status or request a connection
- Contact your Urban Local Body (Municipal Corporation, Municipality, or Nagar Panchayat) to ask whether AMRUT 2.0 water/sewerage infrastructure has reached your ward or area.
- If infrastructure is available nearby but your household isn't connected, submit a connection request at your municipal water works office — a nominal connection fee may apply depending on your local body's policy.
- Check amrut.gov.in for state-wise and city-wise project status and coverage progress.
- For water body rejuvenation or green space projects in your city, your Municipal Corporation's Urban Development wing is the relevant contact.
