Swachh Bharat Mission — Gramin

₹12,000 financial assistance for eligible rural households to build a toilet, as part of India's flagship drive to end open defecation.

What this scheme offers

SBM-Gramin pays a ₹12,000 incentive (₹7,200 from the Centre and ₹4,800 from the state; the central share rises to ₹10,800 in North-Eastern and special category states) to help eligible rural households construct an Individual Household Latrine (IHHL). The amount is credited directly to the beneficiary's bank account, typically in two installments of ₹6,000 each. Since launch, the mission has supported the construction of over 10 crore toilets. Phase 2, currently underway, focuses on sustaining Open Defecation Free (ODF) status and expanding to solid and liquid waste management (ODF Plus) at the village level.

Who is eligible

  • Rural households that do not currently have a household toilet.
  • BPL households are automatically eligible.
  • Among APL (above poverty line) households, eligibility is limited to specific categories: SC, ST, persons with disabilities, small and marginal farmers, landless labourers with a homestead, and women-headed households.
  • Some states extend the subsidy to rebuild a damaged or non-functional toilet — check with your Gram Panchayat.

Documents required

  • Aadhaar card
  • BPL certificate, or proof of the relevant APL sub-category (caste certificate, disability certificate, farmer land record, etc.)
  • Bank account details, for DBT
  • Mobile number
