Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV)

Free residential upper-primary and secondary schools for girls from SC, ST, OBC, minority and BPL families in educationally backward blocks — board, lodging and schooling all covered.

What this scheme offers

For a girl in an educationally backward block, the distance to a secondary school and the expectation that she'll help at home rather than board away from it often combine to end her education right around the age KGBV is built to intervene. It provides exactly what makes the difference: a free residential school — board, lodging, meals, and schooling together, so a family isn't weighing travel costs or a daughter's safety on a daily commute against keeping her enrolled. Priority within KGBV goes specifically to girls from SC, ST, OBC, minority and BPL families in blocks the Ministry has identified as educationally backward, running upper-primary through secondary levels, now folded into the broader Samagra Shiksha framework.

Who is eligible

  • Girls belonging to SC, ST, OBC, minority, or BPL families, from an educationally backward block (as identified by the Ministry of Education).
  • Typically Class 6-12, depending on the specific KGBV's level (some run up to Class 8, others through Class 12).
  • Priority often given to out-of-school girls, those at risk of dropping out, or those from particularly marginalised sub-groups within the above categories.

Documents required

  • Aadhaar card
  • Caste/category certificate (SC/ST/OBC/minority) or BPL certificate
  • Birth certificate
  • Previous school records, if transferring from another school

How to apply

  1. Contact your Block Education Officer or nearest KGBV directly to check seat availability and the current admission process, since admission cycles and specific procedures can vary by state and block.
  2. Submit the required category/income certificates along with your daughter's academic records.
  3. Selection is typically based on the specific eligibility priority list for that block, given limited seats relative to demand.
  4. Once admitted, boarding, lodging, meals, uniforms and schooling are all provided free for the duration of enrollment.
  5. If no KGBV operates in your block, ask your District Education Officer about the nearest one, since some blocks share facilities across block boundaries.
