What this scheme offers
Launched on 14 May 2015, USTTAD works to preserve India's rich tradition of minority-community handicrafts and traditional arts — embroidery, weaving, woodwork, metalwork, pottery and similar heritage trades — while helping artisans modernise their skills and reach better markets. It funds structured training programmes where experienced master craftspeople (ustads) pass skills to the next generation, alongside design development support to make traditional products more marketable, exposure visits and participation in exhibitions and trade fairs, and documentation of traditional craft knowledge that might otherwise be lost. The scheme is implemented through the National Minorities Development & Finance Corporation (NMDFC) and empanelled training partners, working alongside related programmes like Hamari Dharohar (heritage documentation) and Nai Roshni (minority women's leadership).

How to apply
- Look for USTTAD-implementing organisations or empanelled training partners active in your craft trade and region — these are typically NGOs or craft development bodies working with the Ministry of Minority Affairs.
- Contact your State Minority Welfare Department or nearest Common Service Centre for information on active training batches near you.
- Register as a trainee or trainer with the relevant implementing organisation, submitting your community and craft-related documents.
- Attend the structured training programme, which pairs experienced master artisans with learners for hands-on skill transfer.
- Design and marketing support, along with exhibition opportunities, typically follow completion of the core training.
