Delhi Free Solar Panel Scheme

A free 3 kW rooftop solar installation for Delhi households using up to 400 units of electricity a month, with the Centre and Delhi government each contributing ₹78,000 toward the typical ₹1.6-1.8 lakh system cost, plus five years of free maintenance. Existing electricity subsidies (200 free units, 50% subsidy to 400) continue unaffected alongside the solar benefit. Target is 2.30 lakh households by March 2027.

What this scheme offers

Rather than treating solar power and the existing electricity subsidy as competing options, Delhi's free solar panel scheme is designed to let households benefit from both at once — a 3 kW rooftop system, installed at zero upfront cost, typically produces around 300 units a month, meaning a household using roughly 200 units can keep its existing subsidy, use part of its own solar generation, and export the surplus back to the grid through net metering. The Centre and Delhi government each contribute ₹78,000 toward a system that usually costs ₹1.6-1.8 lakh, covering most or all of the cost, plus five years of free maintenance. The target is 2.30 lakh households by March 2027.

Who is eligible

  • Domestic electricity consumer in Delhi with a valid connection.
  • Monthly consumption up to 400 units.
  • Roof space technically suitable for a 3 kW solar installation, as assessed by the empanelled vendor.

Documents required

  • Electricity bill / consumer number
  • Aadhaar card
  • Proof of roof ownership/rights, where required by the vendor or housing society

How to apply

  1. Register on the PM Surya Ghar portal (pmsuryaghar.gov.in), which serves as the entry point for the central subsidy component.
  2. Wait for the Delhi government's vendor empanelment and zero-cost application process to open, as the state-specific rollout was still being finalised.
  3. Once your application is processed, an empanelled vendor conducts a technical assessment of your roof.
  4. Installation proceeds once approved, with the combined central and state subsidy covering the bulk of the cost.
  5. Your existing electricity subsidy (200 free units, 50% subsidy to 400) continues unaffected alongside the new solar generation.
