Ksheera Bhagya Yojana (Karnataka Free School Milk)

Free 150 ml of milk five days a week for children in Classes 1 to 10 of Karnataka's government and aided schools and in anganwadis — about 64 lakh school children and 40 lakh anganwadi children, supplied through KMF since 2013.

What this scheme offers

Ksheera Bhagya, launched on 1 August 2013 together with the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF), gives every child in Classes 1 to 10 of a government or government-aided school 150 ml of free milk, now five days a week — it began at three days, and KMF's own page gives five. Anganwadi children from six months to six years also get 150 ml, and moderately underweight anganwadi children get 200 ml. KMF reports that the scheme covers 55,683 schools and about 64 lakh pupils, plus 64,000 anganwadis and about 40 lakh small children. The milk is made from whole milk powder (18 grams per serving in schools) mixed with sugar, which also helps KMF use surplus milk. Nothing has to be applied for: enrolment in the school or anganwadi is enough.

Who is eligible

  • Students of Classes 1 to 10 in government and government-aided schools anywhere in Karnataka.
  • Children aged six months to six years enrolled at an anganwadi centre.
  • Moderately underweight anganwadi children get 200 ml instead of 150 ml; separate anganwadi egg schemes run alongside.
  • There is no income or category test and no application — the school or anganwadi covers every enrolled child.

Documents required

  • School enrolment or anganwadi registration is the only requirement.
  • No separate certificate, card or application form is needed.
  • A parent who finds that no milk is being served should raise it with the headmaster or the anganwadi supervisor.

How to apply

  1. Enrol your child in a government or aided school (Classes 1 to 10), or at the local anganwadi centre.
  2. Milk is served at the school or anganwadi on scheduled days — five days a week according to KMF.
  3. Each serving is 150 ml, prepared at the school or anganwadi from milk powder and sugar.
  4. If milk is not being served, tell the headmaster or the School Development and Monitoring Committee.
  5. For anganwadi children, raise it with the anganwadi worker or the Child Development Project Officer.
