Mission Organic Development Initiative (MODI)

A ₹500 crore policy aimed at transitioning Ladakh's entire agricultural base to organic farming, announced with the target of making the UT fully organic.

What this scheme offers

Most Indian organic-farming transitions start from a genuinely conventional baseline — decades of chemical fertiliser and pesticide use that has to be actively reversed. Ladakh's situation is different: its high-altitude terrain and climate have kept pesticide and fertiliser use naturally low for a long time already, which means MODI's ₹500 crore push toward full organic status is less about starting from scratch and more about formalising, certifying and building market value around farming practices that were already close to organic. The goal, announced with a target of making the entire UT fully organic, is to convert that existing natural advantage into a recognised certification and the market premium that comes with it.
