What this scheme offers
Launched in September 2023 as Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai, this is one of India's largest direct cash-transfer programmes for women: ₹1,000 lands in the bank account of the woman head of each eligible household on the 15th of every month. The idea behind it is recognition of unpaid household work, not charity — the government calls it a 'rightful entitlement'. After the April 2026 election, the new TVK government confirmed the scheme would continue, and in its August 2026 budget renamed it Magalir Urimai Thittam. The ruling party's manifesto promised to raise the amount to ₹2,500 a month (as 'Madhippumigu Magalir Thittam'), but as of now the payment remains ₹1,000 — don't count on the higher amount until it's formally notified.
