What this scheme offers
On 18 May 2026, his first day as Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister, C. Joseph Vijay of the newly elected Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government signed an order granting 200 units of free electricity every two months to every household in the state, delivered through TANGEDCO (Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation). This scheme was one of three orders signed on the government's first day, alongside other welfare measures under its "Vetri Tamizhagam" governance programme. The free units are applied automatically against your electricity bill for the billing cycle — consumption beyond 200 units in that period is billed at standard rates.
Who is eligible
- Every domestic (household) electricity consumer in Tamil Nadu, connected through TANGEDCO.
- No separate income test or application — this is applied universally to domestic connections.
How this works
- No application is needed — the free units are automatically applied to eligible domestic electricity bills.
- Check your electricity bill for the 200-unit credit reflected against your two-month billing cycle.
- Usage beyond 200 units in that cycle is billed at TANGEDCO's standard tariff rates.
- If your bill doesn't reflect the free units correctly, contact your local TANGEDCO office or their customer service helpline to report the discrepancy.
- Since this scheme was introduced very recently, check tangedco.gov.in for any updates to implementation details or billing cycle specifics.
