What this scheme offers
JSY is a safe motherhood scheme under the National Health Mission, paying a cash incentive to eligible women who deliver at a government or accredited private health facility. The amount depends on your state's performance category and whether you're in a rural or urban area: in Low Performing States (LPS — including UP, Bihar, MP, Rajasthan and others), women get ₹1,400 (rural) or ₹1,000 (urban); in High Performing States (HPS), it's ₹700 (rural) or ₹600 (urban). Women who still deliver at home receive a flat ₹500. JSY works alongside the Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK), which provides completely free and cashless delivery — including C-sections, medicines, diagnostics, hospital diet, and free transport to and from the facility. ASHA workers who facilitate the delivery also receive a performance incentive.
Who is eligible
- In Low Performing States: all pregnant women delivering in a government facility qualify, regardless of age, income category, or number of children.
- In High Performing States: the woman must be 19 or older, hold a BPL card or SC/ST proof, and this benefit applies only for the first two living children.
- A Mother and Child Protection (MCP) card, issued by your ASHA worker at registration, is needed in all cases.
Documents required
- JSY card or Mother and Child Protection (MCP) card
- Aadhaar card
- BPL card or SC/ST certificate, where required (HPS states)
- Bank account details
How to apply
- Register your pregnancy at your nearest Anganwadi Centre or public health facility as early as possible, where your ASHA worker issues your MCP/JSY card.
- Attend the recommended antenatal check-ups — your ASHA worker will guide and often accompany you.
- Deliver at a government hospital, primary health centre, or accredited private facility to qualify for the higher institutional-delivery amount.
- The cash incentive is typically processed at the facility itself and credited to your bank account.
- Your ASHA worker can help you access the linked JSSK benefits — free medicines, diagnostics, diet, and transport — at the time of delivery.
