What this scheme offers
Launched in December 2014, Rashtriya Gokul Mission focuses on conserving and genetically improving India's indigenous cattle and buffalo breeds — like Gir, Sahiwal, Red Sindhi, Tharparkar and Murrah — through scientific breeding. Farmers can access artificial insemination (AI) services using high-genetic-merit semen, often at subsidised or free rates through state animal husbandry departments. The scheme also establishes "Gokul Grams" — integrated cattle development centres that combine breeding, rearing and demonstration facilities — and supports Nandi Shalas (bull-rearing farms) to produce quality breeding bulls. A national database, the Information Network for Animal Productivity and Health (INAPH), tracks animal productivity and breeding records to guide targeted improvement. The mission works alongside the National Programme for Dairy Development to build the broader dairy value chain.
